Brightening Lives With New Smiles

Helping Your Teen Feel Confident About Orthodontics

A lack of confidence is an issue that most people face at one time or another. In fact, 85% of people have struggled with low self-esteem. For adults, self-esteem issues can stem from a number of life-related scenarios, including job titles, financial status, whether or not they have kids, etc.

For teens, self-esteem is often tied to how they feel about their appearance. These are formative years where kids are trying to figure out who they are and how they express themselves. Meanwhile, their bodies are constantly changing.

This can lead to a common trend of low self-confidence in teens, especially young girls. In fact, 70% of girls feel like they don’t measure up to certain standards such as appearance. It’s very important that teens (and adults, for that matter) learn to love and appreciate themselves where they currently are.

Self-love is the first and most important step in improving self-esteem.

One simple, yet effective way to feel better about yourself and your circumstances is to simply smile more. Smiling naturally releases endorphins in the body, resulting in a person feeling happier. It also makes the people around you happier.

However, many teens are hesitant to smile due to alignment issues such as overbites, underbites, and gaps between their teeth. The good news is that these issues can effectively be treated with braces. The bad news is…

Braces Can Be Intimidating for Teens

Teens with misaligned teeth often feel trapped. On one hand, the state of their teeth leaves them insecure about their appearance. On the other hand, the idea of having braces may seem worse. Either way, they probably won’t feel like smiling.

But with orthodontic treatment, they can ultimately reach a place where they feel confident in their smile. It’s important that they understand it’s about not the end-goal, not the temporary treatment window.

It’s equally important that they realize there are several forms of orthodontic treatment available, some of which are very discreet.

Keeping Braces Unnoticeable

For teens who want the benefits of braces without metal brackets being bonded to their teeth, Invisalign is a popular choice. Invisalign uses clear aligner trays that are virtually undetectable and can be removed during mealtimes and brushing.

They do need to be worn for 22 hours a day, every day. Otherwise, progress will be slowed, and their teeth may feel irritated. Many teens are able to responsibly handle Invisalign with little to no issues.

Some, however, may actually prefer traditional bracket braces. In this case, they can choose clear brackets. While not quite as unnoticeable as Invisalign, clear brackets are surprisingly camouflaged, especially in photos.

Timing is Important

By the time your child is a teenager, their teeth are likely in a place where they’re ready for orthodontic treatment. However, you can be strategic with when they get them. If their close friends are getting braces or Invisalign (or they’ve already started treatment), it can be a good time for your child to start as well. That way, they can experience it together and help each other feel more confident.

You could also consider getting treatment along with your child. If you have some alignment issues you’d like corrected, why not get braces or Invisalign with your teen? This will help normalize the experience, showing them that there’s nothing strange about having braces.
