What Makes Up the Dhingra Smile?

Smile Width
When you imagine the “perfect smile”, do you see more or fewer pearly whites? A broader, fuller smile is key to optimal aesthetics. We reduce the buccal corridors, or the dark spaces between your back teeth and the corner of your lips, to create a brighter and more complete smile.
Increased smile width also improves nasal airway flow, which can reduce the risk of snoring, mouth breathing and sleep apnea. To achieve a wider smile, we often use rapid palatal expanders in children prior to braces. For adults, we offer miniscrew-assisted rapid palatal expansion (MARPE) and use broader archwires with braces to achieve the same effect. Even with Invisalign®, we can use their expansion system for the same wide results.
Incisor and Gingival Display
Visually, the amount of incisor and gingiva (or gum tissue) visible is crucial to an aesthetically pleasing smile. In an ideal scenario, a normal smile reveals all of your incisors along with 1-2 millimeters of gingiva. This combination of proportions results in a stunning and bright smile.
We use individualized bracket positioning to maximize incisor display for our patients. If necessary, we supplement orthodontic treatment with laser gingivectomies to achieve optimal gingival exposure. Laser gingivectomies are minimally invasive treatments with fast healing times and little discomfort.
Smile Arc
A more harmonious smile is achieved when the curvature of the upper front teeth follows the curvature of the lower lip. To create this look, we continuously adjust the braces bracket position and make finishing bends at the end of your treatment to enhance the smile arc.
Tooth Shape and Smile Symmetry
In addition to the smile’s width, arc and gingival display, tooth size and shape must be proportional. The left and right sides should mirror one another and match the other facial features. Since the teeth are rarely naturally symmetric, we perform enameloplasty (tooth contouring) on most patients prior to the completion of treatment. Tooth contouring is quick, painless and provides immediate aesthetic results.
