Brightening Lives With New Smiles

Baby Teeth and Braces: When Can You See an Orthodontist?

Almost everyone goes through two sets of teeth in their lifetime. First, you have your primary teeth, better known as baby teeth. Though these start developing while you’re still in the womb, they don’t emerge until you are 4-6 months old.

Even while these teeth are emerging, your second set of teeth are already developing. These are your permanent teeth (also known as adult teeth or secondary teeth). Permanent teeth won’t start coming in until around age 6. As they dobaby tooth will fall out, and the permanent tooth will take its place.

On average, children will have all of their permanent teeth by age 11 or 12.

Many parents assume that they have to wait until this point to bring their child to an orthodontist. However, that’s not true. In fact, you should do it a few years sooner.

When to Take Your Child to an Orthodontist

The American Association of Orthodontics recommends that children see an orthodontist by the age of 7 for their initial screening. This will allow them to assess the current situation and provide consultation for next steps. Usually, your child won’t receive braces until all of their baby teeth have successfully fallen out.

There are, however, exceptions.

Every child’s situation is unique. Some lose baby teeth sooner. Others can lose them later. In certain situations, it may even be necessary to have baby teeth manually removed. This is typically done when a baby tooth is preventing a permanent tooth from growing in. Though your orthodontist will provide guidance on the situation, a dentist will perform the actual removal.

There are also situations where a child may receive braces while they still have a baby tooth in place.

Setting Your Child Up for Orthodontic Success

The earlier you schedule an orthodontist appointment for your child, the better. As we said before, every child’s situation is unique to them. If there are problems forming, an orthodontist can spot them and advise you accordingly. This can help your child avoid future discomfort and dental troubles.

At Dhingra Orthodontics, we strive to provide a fun and welcoming environment for children. We also provide professional orthodontic services for adults as well. If you’re dealing with alignment issues, it’s a good idea to schedule a consultation for yourself as well. Wearing braces or Invisalign alongside your child can encourage them through the treatment process.
