Brightening Lives With New Smiles

Everything You Need to Know About Invisalign

Since entering the market at the end of the 90s, Invisalign has quickly become one of the most popular options for orthodontic care. Invisalign offers the same end goal as traditional bracket braces: properly aligned teeth and a healthier mouth.

Invisalign, however, carries some distinct advantages. True to its name, the trays used for Invisalign are nearly invisible to the human eye. Chances are, you’ve talked with someone wearing Invisalign before and didn’t even realize it. One of the other unique aspects is the fact you can remove the trays at any time. This means you can technically eat whatever you want.

If you’re considering Invisalign, you probably have a few questions on your mind. Here are some common ones we receive:

How Does Invisalign Work?

Before you can get Invisalign, you’ll need to meet with an orthodontist. The orthodontist exams your teeth and lays out the treatment options available to you. If Invisalign is chosen as the method of correction, the next step is for photos, impressions, and x-rays to be taken of your teeth.

After that, a 3D model is created. This establishes a trajectory for your alignment process from start to finish. With Invisalign, you go through a series of aligner trays, each set getting you closer to that perfect smile you’re aiming for.

Each tray moves your teeth about .1mm. Typically, you’ll switch trays every two weeks. When you switch to a new tray, you might feel a little pressure. This passes as your teeth adjust. The Invisalign process generally takes 12-18 months to complete.

To stay on schedule and achieve the best results, your trays must be worn 20-22 hours per day.

When you’re done with your final set of trays, you’ll be fitted with a retainer. This may be permanent or removable depending on certain factors, including your own personal preference.

Is Invisalign Only for Adults?

Due to their discretion, Invisalign is a very popular choice for orthodontic treatment among adults. However, people of all ages can be candidates for Invisalign. If your child is getting Invisalign, it is very important that they understand the responsibility of wearing their aligners for the appropriate amount of time, as well as only drinking water while wearing them.

Does Invisalign Cost More Than Braces?

Since its newer technology, some people assume that Invisalign costs more than bracket braces. The truth is, it can depend. After all, there are different types of braces available. Generally, the cost of Invisalign is comparable to the cost of braces. For those deciding between braces and Invisalign, it typically comes down to preference rather than cost.

Am I a Candidate for Invisalign?

There was a time when Invisalign was a bit limited in the conditions it could help. Thanks to a number of advancements, however, most teeth can be treated with Invisalign today. Ultimately, it comes down to selecting the choice that best meets your lifestyle.

As we said before, Invisalign trays need to be worn 20-22 hours a day, and while you’re wearing them, you can only drink water.

For many people, that’s no problem at all. If you’re the type of person who likes to sip coffee throughout the day or constantly munch on something, however, traditional braces might be a better choice. Ultimately, the only way to find out your options and learn what’s best for you is to schedule an appointment with an orthodontist.
