Brightening Lives With New Smiles

Importance of Proper Brushing with Braces

Brushing is always important. It is the best defense against plaque buildup, enamel wear, and cavities. Good brushing with a quality brush and toothpaste not only keeps your mouth healthy, but it helps to keep your teeth looking their best.

When you have braces, brushing is arguably even more important. Braces provide additional spaces where food and particles can get stuck. It’s critical that you not only brush regularly but correctly. Failure to do so will not only leave you exposed to enamel wear and cavities, but it could result in white spots known as “white spot lesions”.

While these little white spots aren’t harmful, they are a little unsightly, detracting from an otherwise beautifully aligned smile.

White spot lesions are the result of decalcification of enamel. Acid from bacteria and food particles penetrates your enamel, dissolving minerals such as calcium and phosphorus. White spot lesions can happen whether you have braces or not. However, they are sometimes more common among people with braces due to the small, hard to reach areas they create.

It doesn’t take long for bacteria and plaque to build up.

The good news is, by regularly (and thoroughly) cleaning your mouth, you can prevent this buildup, stopping white spot lesions before they can start.

Proper Teeth Care for Braces

Just as you would normally, you should brush every morning and evening when you have braces. Also brushing after every meal is ideal, though not always feasible.  If you can, try to rinse out your mouth with mouthwash after every meal. A good antibacterial mouthwash can remove any lingering bacteria hiding in your braces.

If nothing else, rinsing with water can help remove unwanted food particles.

Flossing is also very important with braces. Though it can be a little tricky, it’s definitely doable. For those with braces, a dental floss threader is the best way to go. Your orthodontist should be able to answer any questions you have. They might even provide you with a threader.

It’s the responsibility of an orthodontist to not only put your braces on and take them off but guide you along your orthodontic journey. That’s why it’s very important that you choose an experienced, trustworthy orthodontist.
