Understanding How Invisalign Works

Virtually everyone wants straight teeth. If you have misalignment, the only way to achieve that is with orthodontic treatment. Unfortunately, many people aren’t eager to get traditional bracket braces. Thankfully, there’s another option that can achieve the same results for a comparable price:

Invisalign.

Invisalign is an alternative to braces that was introduced in the late 90s. Since then, it’s become an increasingly popular choice for teens and adults. Unlike bracket braces, which are fixed on your teeth, Invisalign uses transparent trays designed to fit around your teeth, gently pushing them towards proper alignment. These trays can easily be removed at any time, eliminating the dietary restrictions that come with traditional braces.

Is Invisalign as Effective as Braces?

For people in need of orthodontic treatment, Invisalign can sound too good to be true. They wonder if it’s less effective or more uncomfortable. The truth is, Invisalign can achieve the same results as braces for most situations. In cases of more severe overbites or underbites, traditional brackets might be the better option.

Still, Invisalign is an option for the majority of patients that we see.

How Does Invisalign Work?

Invisalign utilizes clear aligner trays made from Class VI medical grade polyurethane resinsBefore receiving Invisalignpatient is examined by an orthodontist to ensure it’s a good fit for them.

If it is, the patient’s teeth impressions are scanned to create a digital 3D representation.  From this, an ideal model is created in a computer program to show where the teeth should be.  Then, a series of aligner molds are made to bring the teeth from their current state to their ideal position.

Aligner trays is to be worn at least 20 hours a day.  Generally, they are only taken out for mealtimes and brushing.  After one to two weeks, a patient is given a new aligner that will move their teeth further towards the desired position.  Depending on how much the teeth can be adjusted, a person may go through anywhere from 5 to 40+ molds.

Each aligner mold moves teeth about a quarter of a millimeter. When the teeth have been moved to the final desired location, the patient is given a retainer to wear.  This will prevent the teeth from shifting back into their original positioning.

Though there may be some initial pressure as you adjust to Invisalignthe process is largely pain free.  Most Invisalign patients adjust quickly and don’t even notice them after a while.
